During 1988-90, I was in Diamind-city Surat.
I always wanted to know if a diamond emits its own light or only reflects it.
I already knew that a diamond shines in the presence of external light-source and the refractive index of diamond helps a cut diamond to reflect the light to the maximum.
Diamond is transparent and this helps for the refraction of the light incident upon it.
In comparison, gold is opaque and reflects the maximum part of the light that falls upon it.
I often wonder what we call 'mind' is opaque or transparent?
If it is opaque it reflects only.
If it is transparent, it has a refractive index as well.
But a diamond or gold are material objects, and none of them emits own light.
Still there are materials that are radio-active and emit electro-magnetic radiation. In this process they gradually decay and ultimately turn into elements that are stable and no more decay or emit radiation.
The material-world is made of elements that are again live and eventually die. The only light that permeats and pervades the live-forms is 'sentience', which gives rise to the sense of individuality. This stage appears when the material becomes well-organized so as to be able to produce its own exact replicas. This is the only way we could distinguish between the 'alive' and those other objects that are not so alive. So neither we could say if they ever 'die'. Thus the material so organized that it takes the form of a physical body and is capable of producing it's own copies, is the fundamental cell which is the basis of all life-forms, how-so-ever big or small. Everyone without exception is a sentient living being who thus has the natural tendency of feeling the life / world external to it. This is so from the very birth. This feeling is invariably and enevitably associated with the sense of 'being' as well. Though the feelings keep changing all the time, the sense of being / existing is the steady light that illuminates all feeling. A feeling could be pleasant or unpleasant, and is stored in brain in the form of memory, how-so-ever clear or obscure. This is then named 'experience' . This experiencing then projects upon the sense of existence / being, the idea of being the one who has the feeling / experience. This way, the division takes roots in the pure, pristine sense of existence / being.
This is again accepted and expressed in the form of individuality and this supposedly individual existence assumes that like one, there are a myriad such individuals who have separate and distinct existence of their own.
Accordingly such an individual believes and claims, he has a 'mind'. The funny thing is : this very mind utters the word 'I' and yet takes the 'mind' as the one that it (kind of) possesses!
That is everyone often confounds between 'I' and 'mind'. Everyone without exception sometimes says :
'I feel, think, know... ',
while on other times also says :
'I can't feel, think, know...'
One also says :
I'm happy, sad, worried, angry, confused, undecided,
And also says :
My mind is not happy, not sad, not worried, not angry, clear, firm, resolved...
This way how the sense of existence is further fragmented without having noticed this subtle process that takes place within the mind / the consciousness. The only reason behind it is the inherent inattention towards this whole thing.
That is but the very way of life itself!
Exactly "WHO" is there to know and understand this mystery / secret of life?

While 'mind' has its own light and shines by itself, it can never know the light that enable it a live instrument of perception.
This light is non-material and never, not all, -immaterial.
It is the very AWARENESS that is THE UNIVERSAL MIND ...
Known as :
प्रज्ञानं ब्रह्म
The material world, that is 'known' in consciousness only, is not capable of attaining this truth by what so ever means.
